All You Need To Know About Mumbai’s Dismantled Hancock Road Over Bridge

March 08 2018   |   Gunjan Piplani

The 136-year old Hancock Road Over Bridge between Sandhurst Road and Byculla, which was dismantled in 2016, will soon be up and functional. If all goes as planned, the new bridge, work on which began recently, will be ready in next 19 months.

PropGuide brings you more about this project and how this will impact the areas around:

*The work on the British-era bridge has begun and will be completed in the next 19 months, including the monsoons. It will connect Mazgaon and Umerkhadi areas.

*The project will be completed at a cost of Rs 52 crore. The road will be 6.46-metres long and will have approaches as wide as 27.45 metres while the road crossing the railway tracks would be 30.8-metres wide.

*The road over bridge was dismantled in November 2016 as the height did not conform to the height specifications to run trains on the 25,000 VAC. The low height of the bridge was creating problems - the conversion of Central Railway's electric traction from Direct Current to Alternating Current, a PTI reported officials as saying. The new trains, that run at an average speed of 60-70 kmph, had to run at a speed of 15 kmph around this bridge.

*Once the bridge is complete, the road traffic that was affected between the east and the west of the area, will be eased.

*The Hancock Bridge was first built in 1879 during the British era. Named after Colonel H. F. Hancock, who served as member and President of the then Bombay Municipal Corporation. It was rebuilt in 1923.
