One of the most recognized landmarks in the beautiful city of Paris, The Louvre or Louvre Museum is also one of the largest museums in the world. This magnificent structure is also a historic monument, a former royal palace and is situated on the Right Bank of the Seine River. A paradise for art and history buffs, the Louvre is the world's most visited museum with more than 9.7 million visitors every year.
The museum opened back in 1793 with 537 paintings on display. Today, nearly 35,000 objects and works of art, right from prehistory to the 21st century, are exhibited at the Louvre. The collection at the museum is divided amongst 8 curatorial departments. These are: Egyptian Antiquities, Near Eastern Antiquities, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiquities, Islamic Art, Sculpture, Decorative Arts, Paintings, Prints and Drawings. The collection also include works of legendary artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Rembrandt.
The Louvre Pyramid is a massive pyramid made of glass and metal and is surrounded by three smaller pyramids. The main and the largest pyramid is the main entrance to the museum which is spread over an area of 60,600 square metres.
It is said that it can take up to nine months to see every single object on display at the Louvre. So if you're planning to see the museum in its entirety, you definitely need to plan well in advance!
