Standing majestically over the River Thames in London, the Tower Bridge is striking and every bit regal. One of the most famous landmarks of London, this iconic structure is a combination of a bascule and suspension bridge, crossing the River Thames. Tower Bridge was constructed following increased commercial development in the East End of London. It took 8 years for the bridge to be completed and was officially inaugurated on 30 June 1894.

Built between 1886 and 1894, the bridge comprises two towers which are tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal pathways. These have been designed to endure horizontal forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge. The two towers carry the vertical reaction of the two walkways and also the vertical component of the forces in the suspended sections. The base of each tower houses the operating machinery and the bascule pivots. Tower Bridge is about 800 feet (244 m) high and the two towers are each 213 feet (65 m) high.

It is truly a sight to behold when the bridge opens up and the bascules are raised to an angle of about 86 degrees to allow river traffic to pass.
