BMC Budget 2020-21: Rs 2,000 Crore Allocated For Coastal Road Project

Asia’s richest civic authority, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced its annual budget worth Rs 33,441 crore for 2020-21, up by eight per cent from the last year which stood at Rs 30,692 crore. The BMC has allocated Rs 2,000 crore for Mumbai’s Coastal Road project, 25 per cent more than the previous year, while Rs 300 crore has been allocated to the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) to make commuting easier for the citizens. Interestingly, the Coastal Road project has been stalled until further orders from the court, while the GMLR is also yet to see any development.

Apart from this, Rs 1,600 crore has been allocated for road improvements for the next year and Rs 50 crore has been allocated for footpath repair. Another Rs 1,500 crore has been allocated for the BEST, for repayment of procured loans and implementation of Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) project.

While the municipal corporation has said that its revenue from property tax has gone down by Rs 335 crore due to exemption of flats which are below 500 sq ft, it is expecting income worth Rs 28,448 crore from other revenue sources in the next financial year.

In addition to this, Rs 10 crore has been set aside for tourism development and the civic body has also announced the creation of a separate department that will promote eco-tourism activities around water bodies. Around Rs 2 crore has been allotted for taking preventive measures to control the Coronavirus.

To meet water requirements of the city, Rs 582 crore has been set aside for Gargai Dam in Thane which will be spread across 849 hectares. The BMC will be spending Rs 3,105 crore on the dam.
