Bring Out Those Compasses, It's Vaastu Time

July 09 2015   |   Katya Naidu

A number of homes are advertised for vaastu compliance. If you believe in vaastu, do not believe anyone blindly. There are a few basic principles of vaastu that you should bear in mind while choosing the right home, and even during decorating it post purchase.

The right elements of the home should point to the right corners in a room and face the right direction. Here is a quick guide:

1. Kitchen and Dining Room:

a. The kitchen should always face the south-east corner. It is governed by the Fire element. The stove should be placed in a way that the person cooking faces east. The water sink should be located as far as possible from the stove, and at north-east end of the kitchen. The large windows of the kitchen should face the eastern side, while the ventilators should be at the southern end. The fridge should be placed in the southwest corner.

b. The kitchen should not be adjoining the toilet. The door of the kitchen should not face the bathroom door either.

c. The dining room should be placed in the West or the East. Sun rays should always fall on the dining table as the rays kill the bacteria in the food. The people sitting at the dining table should be facing east or north.

d. The door of the pooja room or the toilet should not open into the dining room.

2. Bathroom

a. The bathroom should be on the eastern side of the room.

b.  The drained water from the bathroom and its pipes should be in the north-east corner of the room.

c. Taps and showers should be on the northern end.

d. Geyser should be at the south-east corner as it should be in the line of the Fire element.

e. The storage and washing machine should also be at the south-east corner.

Bedroom:

a. The master bedroom should be located at the south-west corner of the house. It represents the Earth element and hence, heaviness.

b. Beds should be arranged in a way that they face south, east or west and never the north.

c. The beds should be placed along the south-west walls. If not, keep them away from the walls.

d. The bed should not be right in front of the bedroom door.

e. Choose earthy colours for the bedroom like brown.

Drawing Room

a. It should be located in the east or north so that it gets enough Sun rays.

b. The door of the drawing room should either be in the east or west.

c. All the electronics and gadgets should be the south-east area of the home.

d. The furniture and the beds should be in regular shapes and not in the form of a hexagon.

e. Avoid dark colours, especially red and black, to paint the hall.

f. Place all the pooja stuff in the north-east corner of the room.
