Housing Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on May 16 made public the list of winners of the Swachh Survekshan 2018. Let’s us look at who stole the show this year-

The best of cities

Top performers: Indore and Bhopal occupy the top two positions, like the previous year’s survey. But, the two cities’ performance on cleanliness comes out even more impressive in light of the fact that this year they had to beat many more rivals to retain the top spot. The survey covered 4,203 cities this year while only 434 cities were surveyed in 2017. In 2016, the survey was conducted in 73 cities, with a population of 10 lakh or more, and the capital cities.

City Beautiful Chandigarh has been ranked third in the national-level category.

Delhi’s pride: In this year’s survey, where 37.66 lakh citizens gave their feedback, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) was named the cleanest municipality area, with a population between one lakh and three lakh. The Delhi Cantt, on the other hand, has emerged as the cleanest cantonment area, followed by Almora, Ranikhet and Nainital (all three in Uttarakhand) .

The south touch: While Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada is rated the cleanest among big cities with over one million population, Karnataka's Mysuru has been ranked the cleanest among cities with population of three lakh to one million.

Movers and takers: Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad has been ranked the fastest moving big city.  Ghaziabad improved its ranking from 351 to 36 among cities with over 10 lakh population.

People’s choice: Rajasthan’s Kota is ranked the best city in terms of 'citizens' feedback'.

In Capital letters: Greater Mumbai has been ranked the cleanest state capital in India.

The right zone: In the category of cities with less than one lakh population, the cleanest city was Bhadson (Punjab) in the north zone, Bundu (Jharkhand) in the east zone, Kakching (Manipur) in the north east zone, Siddipet (Telangana) in the south zone, and Panchgani (Maharashtra) in the west zone.

State order: Mineral-rich Jharkhand has emerged as the best-performing state in terms of cleanliness while Maharashtra stood at the second position. Chhattisgarh is at the third spot.

What is different about this year’s survey?

This year's exercise allocated higher weightage to the feedback from citizens and direct observation by assessors on the performance parameters of the cities on cleanliness. Citizens’ feedback was given a 35 per cent weightage in the survey.

Also, state ranking was introduced in this year's survey.
