Confused Between Delhi And Hyderabad? Let The Temperature Decide

May 27 2015   |   Vidhika Dalmia

The urban lifestyle boom has had people looking towards the metro cities as the place-to-be. Everyone with a dream heads for the closest city. Despite the facilities that the cities provide, prohibitive real estate prices of flats in India remain one of the biggest deterrent factors. If you are determined to make the move, here is something that you should think about before making your choice – temperature.

Delhi: The mere mention of the term temperature in Delhi is sure to get you many reactions. The most common ones that you get to hear are scorching summers and freezing winters! Let's take a closer look. The soaring temperatures in this city ensure that May is the cruellest month of the year. April 2015 saw the residents of the parched city demanding water tankers from the Delhi Jal Board.

To meet the rising demand for apartments in Delhi, builders may have developed residential projects in Delhi without taking into account the basic amenities. The end result of this unplanned growth has been groundwater depletion. While nearly 80% of the city has been crying for water, Delhi has the dubious “claim to fame” for being the worst city for wasting water.

If the cries for water were not enough to put you off, consider the frequent instances of power cuts. Most Delhiites head indoors to beat the heat with coolers and air-conditioners. However, the high demand for power has led to power outages with the city infrastructure not being able to handle the excess load. With the Delhi population increasing by over two million annually, this situation is definitely something that only the bravehearts can face. Most educational institutions, offices, and commercial complexes have central air-conditioning, as does Delhi's Metro Rail, which provides some respite to residents.

The winters are definitely better in terms of weather conditions, though the temperature might drop to 1-5 degree Celsius. The only trouble with the chilly months is the worsening of the air pollution in the city. The impact on the public health is significant considering Delhi is ranked top among the cities in the world with air quality issues. To top it all, there have been reported cases of people dying of heat waves in summers and cold waves during the winters.

Hyderabad: A city where the cost of living is about 30% higher than Delhi, Hyderabad's temperature in summer can put you off. Temperatures can soar as high as 45 degrees Celsius in May, and each year the citizens are observing early onset of the summer. Experts predict severe heat-wave conditions as something to watch out for.

Hyderabad is no stranger to power cuts and water shortage. High temperature in summers without replenishment causes the two lakes, Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar, which are the main sources of water supply, to dry up. During the hot months, the supply of water to residential projects in Hyderabad is never adequate. Moreover, the demand for power shoots up and the supply is never adequate, resulting in power cuts of 4-12 hours for domestic consumers.

The winter months are fairly pleasant, but cyclonic activities over the Bay of Bengal could adversely affect weather conditions in the city. Hyderabad being an industrial sector, from the vehicles, construction activities, etc., add to the air pollution, which has emerged as one of the biggest concerns. Since the winter months make the condition more acute, those suffering from asthma find it difficult. The monsoon months do tend to make up for the oppressive heat, but be prepared for an increase in the humidity levels.

Rapid urbanization has led to increasing construction activities, population migration and pollutant emission on both Hyderabad and Delhi. While the cities do offer the best in terms of job opportunities, you have to make a trade-off when it comes to adjusting to the living conditions or when buying flats in upcoming properties in Delhi or Hyderabad. However, the bottom line is that Delhi is one of the most polluted cities to live in. So, maybe Hyderabad is a better choice?
