Delhi Set To Get New Road Infrastructure

November 20, 2017   |   Surbhi Gupta

This is a known fact that the national capital is infamous for its frequent hour-long traffic jams and congestion along key arterial roads, making public transport more preferable than cabs, private vehicles. The rising population and  infrastructure make travel a painful experience for daily commuters. Since Delhi remains a centre point for traveling between the job hubs of Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad and Faridabad, there is an immediate need to create bypasses that would decongest the main roads of the city.

PropGuide takes you through upcoming and proposed road infrastructure and development in the city that would make the commute easier.

North-South corridor

As Delhi government has got the approval from the LG for North-South signal-free corridor, the construction work has been fast tracked. The signal-free corridor will bring relief to people travelling from Signature Bridge (Wazirabad) to Indira Gandhi International Airport via Zakhira, Pankha Road, Nalah Road, and Dwarka. The corridor would comprise of an elevated six-lane road for 28 km, 9-km elevated stretch along Nazafgarh Drain and a 6-km tunnel connecting Zakhir and Pankha Road in west Delhi. The road is expected to be completed in three and a half years and is undertaken by Delhi Public Works Department. The road is expected to bring down the travel time between Wazirabad and airport to 30 minutes.

Elevated cycle corridor to Barapullah

Delhi will be getting its first six-km elevated cycle track will be built from Satpula drain in Saket to Barapullah flyover. It would be 20-ft wide and would be built at an expense of Rs 50-crore. Dedicated cycle stations will be built where bicycles will be available for rent. The track would be covered and have solar panels on roof, streetlights and CCTV cameras. The Barapullah corridor too would have cycle track and would be connected to this proposed highway. NITI Aayog will provide support services like expertise to this project being executed by the Public Works Department of the Delhi government.

Elevated road From Ashram Chowk to Badarpur

Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal has given approval for constructing an elevated road link from Ashram Chowk to Badarpur. The road would cut down the peak hour traffic on the route. Currently, the 10-km stretch takes more than 30 minutes to cross due to congestion at Mohan Estate and Sarita Vihar. Commuters will be able to bypass these traffic points during office hours.

Four model roads

Recently, the Delhi administration announced a pilot project to develop four roads as model roads. The roads to be transformed are  Mehrauli–Badarpur Road, Aurobindo Marg, Mathura Road and Chirag Dilli Road. The target is to ensure that these roads are encroachment-free and have smart traffic management systems. All kinds of obstruction and illegal parking will also be removed on these stretches.

Proposed elevated corridor between South Delhi and Greater Noida

Soon the residents will be able to travel to South Delhi directly from Greater Noida through an elevated corridor. The feasibility study has been done by the Public Works Department and it had proposed an elevated corridor over Yamuna River. The proposed plan shows the corridor starting from Aali village road and National Highway 2 and ends at Noida-Greater Noida expressway crossing Yamuna. The corridor will move parallel to the railway track before crossing Agra canal in the form of a bridge. The major portion of the corridor would be an 8-lane with the provision of cycle track and footpath. The total length of the corridor is expected to be 7-km and its construction is likely to be completed only after 2020.
