Model Roads Could Be A Game Changer For Delhi

The residents of south Delhi or commuters bypassing south Delhi may soon witness a smooth ride on the roads, thanks to the Delhi government's plans to develop four model roads in the national capital. This network of roads is expected to the congestion on the Faridabad-Gurgaon route that passes through south Delhi.

What are model roads?

The Delhi government has picked four roads — the Mehrauli-Badarpur road, the Aurobindo Marg, the Mathura Road and the Chirag Dilli road to upgrade and make them encroachment-free. These are among the city's busy corridors which are being developed on a pilot basis, with systems in place for smart management of traffic and need-based infrastructural development. The model will later be replicated on other routes as well. Any obstruction and illegal parking will also be removed on these stretches. While the government is focusing on timely implementation of the project, the involved agencies, including the Public Work Department, the transport department of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, will handover the timeline to the city's Lieutenant Governor.

The categorisation

The roads in the national capital have been divided into three categories — A, B and C. Almost 77 corridors have been identified and classified into multiple categories while six task force teams have been formed who would look after the implementation of the objective. There are 28 corridors under the A-category roads, including the Kemal Ataturk Marg and the Sardar Patel Marg. These corridors have been identified for immediate action for traffic management. The C category roads are the ones that will require a longer span of time and the action might include construction of flyovers, foot-over-bridges and change in road design. No clarity has been given on Category B roads. 

Also, the corridors where flyovers and U-turns will be built have to be specifically cleaned, kept green and beautified. While the road-owning agencies will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of roads and for keeping them encroachment-free, they will also submit a plan of action to be implemented by the government.

Areas that will benefit

The affluent neighbourhood of East of Kailash, Greater Kailash, Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar, Nehru Place, New Friends Colony and South Extension-II will be greatly impacted as the encroachments and illegal parking will be removed from the route. This will make commute easy and faster. For those travelling to Gurgaon from south Delhi and Noida will benefit the most as peak-hour congestion is a concern for daily commuters.
