DMRC To Build Patna Metro Network; Work To Start By 2019-End

The way in which people commute in the state capital is set to change, with the Bihar Cabinet, approving the allotment of the Patna Metro Rail project work to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) , on September 3, 2019. Work on the project, say officials, might start by the end of 2019.  

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of the project on February 17, 2019, days after it received an approval from the Union Cabinet.

Here is all you need to know about the project.

Cost and timeline: To be built at an estimated cost of over Rs 13,366 crores, the project is expected to be completed within five years. While the construction on the project has yet to start, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has directed officials to initiate the process at the earliest. 

Corridors: The Patna Metro rail project would have two corridors. One would run between Danapur and Mithapur, while the other would run between the Patna Railway Station to New Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT) .

Danapur-Mithapur corridor: The 16.94-km-long Danapur-Mithapur corridor that would connect the eastern parts of the city with the western parts will have 11 stations. Of these, three stations would be elevated, while the remaining eight would be underground. The Danapur Cantt-Mithapur corridor would pass through the heart of city and connect densely populated areas such as the Raza Bazar, the Secretariat, the High Court and the Law University Railway Station.

Patna Station-New ISBT corridor: The 14.45-km-long Patna Station to New ISBT corridor that would connect the northern parts of the city with the southern parts would have 12 stations. Of these, nine stations would be elevated while the remaining three would be underground. Apart from connecting the city railway station and the main bus terminus, this corridor would connect the Gandhi Maidan, the Patna Medical Collage and Hospital (PMCH) , the Patna University, Rajendra Nagar, the Mahatma Gandhi Setu and Transport Nagar.

Impact on real estate

According to government estimates, the Patna Metro rail project is expected to benefit over 26.23 lakh people, directly and indirectly. It would also work its magic on Patna real estate.

Value of property in the areas that would have a Metro connectivity, would increase when the network becomes operational, as has been true of cities that have a Metro network in place. Consequently, rates of land, as well as property would increase. Landowners whose land would be acquired for the project would be able to get prices way higher than the market rate in Patna. Landlords will also be able to earn better rents for their investment properties.
