Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna, Austria

September 20 2013   |   Proptiger

Talk about unusual home designs, and this is as strange as it can get! Cast one look at the Hundertwasserhaus and you will stand bedazzled by its randomness and peculiar architecture.

Tucked along the street in a residential locality in Vienna, Hundertwasserhaus was the brainchild of famous architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser and architect Joseph Krawina (as the co-creator) . Friedensreich Hundertwasser was an Austrian artist who originally started out as a painter but moved on to design and architecture. Hundertwasserhaus was brought to life between 1983 and 1986, and what is a renowned landmark in Vienna today had to face severe criticism back in the day, when it was being designed. Owing to the rich culture and history of Vienna, Hundertwasserhaus was ridiculed by many who believed that it would not blend with Vienna’s cityscape.

Uneven designs, mixed colours and a typically unconventional architecture is what Hundertwasserhaus in Austria is all about. Here, you will witness a unique amalgamation of unlikely hues, designs and shapes. Hundertwasserhaus was also supposed to have unevenly placed floors, but this plan had to be dropped, as it would not have been practically feasible for the structure to stand with uneven levels.

A few of the things that you will notice at the first sight include a one-of-its-kind garden on the roof, asymmetrically painted housing units, usage of unusual mosaic lines across curved walls, amazingly designed balconies, distinctively painted pillars, oddly placed domes and unevenly shaped window fittings. What’s more, the rooftop garden even has trees which are rooted within some of the apartments!

One thing to be noted here is that Hundertwasserhaus is not open to public. It is a private residential complex comprising individual apartments and can be viewed only from the outside. The external facade is spectacular, and it is largely appreciated by lovers of art and design.

Love it or loathe it, Hundertwasserhaus stands tall as Vienna’s most famous unusual architecture. Be sure to visit this strange yet impressive architectural masterpiece on your next trip to Austria.
