Interesting Facts about India's Republic Day
India will soon be celebrating its 64th Republic Day. The date 26 January, every year, is synonymous with a holiday from work, spending time with friends and family and of course, watching the colourful Republic Day parade on television, held at Rajpath in the national capital.
While we all know that Republic Day marks the date on which the Constitution of India came into existence on 26 January, 1950, there are many other facts associated with this day of national importance. Here, we bring you a compilation of such interesting facts:
1. Republic Day celebrations span three days! The Beating Retreat held on the third day marks the end of the celebrations.
2. There are only two original copies of the Constitution in India, written in Hindi and English. They have been preserved in helium-filled cases and placed in the Parliament of India.
3. The Indian Constitution is the longest in the world and you surely can't read it in a day!
4. Writing the constitution was no easy task. The final version was formed almost after two years, 11 months and 18 days.
5. The Constitution came into circulation at exactly 10:18 AM on January 26, 1950.
6. 'Abide by Me' is the song that is played to mark the end of the ceremony during the Beating Retreat ceremony.
7. A number of bravery awards are given to deserving candidates on Republic Day. These include Veer Chakra, Maha Veer Chakra, Param Veer Chakra, Kirti Chakra and Ashoka Chakra.
