Keep Your Home Safe with These Easy Tips

June 10, 2014   |   Tania Seth

Is the city we live in really safe? Perhaps not.

With the increasing crime rate in our cities, it has become very important to safeguard our homes from the prying eyes of thieves and burglars. Criminals are figuring out new ways to break into houses every day, and safeguarding your home is of utmost concern to keep your family and belongings away from such dangers. In this post, we have compiled a list of some of the most effective tips to keep your home safe:

Basic safety measures: When you move into a home, always ensure that all basic security systems are in place. Change the locks on the main entrances so as to ensure that nobody else has access to the house, and inspect all other doors and windows to check for non-functional locks and bolts. This is the first step towards guarding your home.

Set up security systems: Setting up a security system at your home is a professional way to make use of technology in order to secure your home. There are a wide range of security systems for homes available in the markets these days, some of which include 24*7 monitoring systems, wired as well as wireless CCTV surveillance, fire and burglar alarms, electronic safes, video door phones, motion sensors and much more. Although setting up a comprehensive security system may involve some costs, it is totally worth it as it offers complete peace of mind to homeowners. Photo Credit: homesecuritysystems/Flickr

Avoid advertising your absence: As much as you would want to avoid letting others know about when you’re going to be away from your residence, you often end up publicizing your holidays and trips, especially across social media networks. The catch here is that criminals are becoming smarter by the day, and someone following your social media posts can easily come to know when it is the perfect time to sneak into your house. Avoid making such announcements about your absence, and if at all you do share, ensure that you only do so with people whom you know personally. Photo Credit: Jason Howie/Flickr

Know your neighbours: Being on good terms with your neighbours is a boon, as a helpful neighbour will not only give you company while you’re around, but will also keep a watchful eye on your residence in your absence. However, this does not mean that you need to make your absence felt to your entire neighbourhood; just a couple of vigilant eyes should be enough. Do make it a point to share your number with your neighbour so that he/she can inform you in case of an emergency while you’re not around. It is also a good idea to request your neighbour to avoid items like newspapers from piling up at your doorstep, as it is a clear sign to onlookers that the house is abandoned.
