#RealtyNewsRoundUp: NRI Husbands May Soon Lose Property, Passport For Deserting Wives

The government is considering changes in the law to enable confiscation of an absconding non-resident India husband’s share of joint property and prevention of alienation of commonly held land to build pressure on delinquent spouses who refuse to answer court summons. Also under consideration are strict measures such as revocation of passports in case of husbands who fail to respond to summonses.

Every property in neighbourhoods under the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will get a unique identification number to allow owners to avail of all a host of civic services such as filing property tax, paying utility bills, etc. There are 50,000 properties in the NDMC's jurisdiction. Of this, 291 properties have already been surveyed and given numbers.

In a first, the Department of Town and Country Planning in Gurgaon has issued recovery notices to owners of over 110 properties to pay back the demolition cost. These illegally built units were demolished before 2008. Together, the owners of these properties owe about Rs 29 lakh to the department.
