The House In The Clouds – Suffolk, England
England’s most peculiar address, The House in the Clouds is an architectural marvel in itself. It is located in Thorpeness, which is one of the best places to experience England as it used to be, back in the day. Appearing as a fancy, miniscule dream house from a distance when approaching from Aldeburgh, The House in the Clouds towers atop the horizon as you enter Thorpeness.
The story behind The House in the Clouds is pretty interesting. It was originally constructed in 1923 as a water tower, in order to ensure proper water supply to the town of Thorpeness. The storybook house was used to disguise the tank, which would otherwise spoil the look and feel of the classic town. Later, once the town started receiving a mains water supply, the tank was dismantled and it was converted into a residential space.
Unique and strange in its own way, this house is like the ones you find in fairy tale illustrations. It was earlier called Gazebo House, until an owner nicknamed it to The House in the Clouds in a kids’ rhyme.
The House in the Clouds stands 70 feet above the ground, and has a total of seven storeys which have five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a living area on the top floor. The house is open to tourists, who can book it on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. This is undoubtedly one of the best places to soak in the British-ness that England has to offer.
The House in the Clouds is a distinctive holiday destination for those looking for an experience off the beaten track. Several vacationers flock to Suffolk every year to witness this beautiful structure perfectly complimented by the adjoining village.
Soaring above Suffolk’s skyline, The House in the Clouds literally tops the list of Holiday Homes in England!
Trivia: Did you know that The House in the Clouds was attacked during the Second World War, and the repair of the original tank resulted in its capacity being reduced from 230000 litres to 140000 litres?
