How Easy Is Life In Bengaluru?

August 17, 2018   |   Sneha Sharon Mammen

India’s Silicon Valley Bengaluru holds the 58th position among 111 cities that were surveyed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) this year to assess ease of living. The Ease Of Living Index released by the government is an eyeopener in more than one aspect. While Pune, Navi Mumbai and Greater Mumbai are right on the top, Rampur in Uttar Pradesh is the last in the pack.

Let’s take a look at how IT city Bengaluru has fared.

With a total score of 34.38 on 100, Bengaluru has got 11.64 on 25 when it comes to governance while Navi Mumbai is a winner in this regard.

 Housing and living

The city scored the worst — 0.06 on 5 — in the housing and inclusiveness category. Ranking in this category is based on two core indicators. It looks at percentage of slums covered through formal housing and percentage of slums covered with basic services.

With respect to safety and security, Bengaluru is far behind Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar with only 1.29 on 5. Sagar is the top scorer in this category. It is also noteworthy that although Bengaluru employs so many, its score is far less than Chandigarh, which is the top city when it comes to economy and employment. All is also not in the pink of health in India's IT capital. The city got a poor score of 2.19 on 6.25, far behind Tiruchirappalli.

If the city has faced traffic bottlenecks, it is reflective in the ranking as transportation and mobility in Bengaluru has a poor score of 1.11 on 5, far behind Thane, which is the leader in this pack.

If you wish to go for cities with assured water supply and uninterrupted power supply, you should be in Erode and Thane, respectively. While news about Bengaluru facing a day zero is an everyday piece, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the green city scores only 2.46 on 5 when it comes to water supply.

Waste management

Waste management in Bengaluru, a city growing by leaps and bounds, size-wise, is also a grave concern. Vijayawada and Tirupati boast the best waste water management techniques and solid waste management techniques in the country, respectively.

How clean is your air?

Not very clean is the answer. While Ludhiana is the best in this category, Bengaluru’s score is 1.66 on 5.
