6 Weekend Getaways From Delhi

Delhi, the fifth most-populous country in the world, is home to roughly 20 million people. It has attained this distinction not only because of its cultural diversity, distinct lifestyles and fast-paced development; but also due to its location which offers its inhabitants varied options to explore the places around it. The life around Delhi is equally exciting as in the city itself. Historical places, hill stations, religious centres, adventure hubs – there is a plethora of destinations to escape to. These places are perfect for a weekend to be spent with your family, friends or beloved. We bring some of the weekend getaways from Delhi within a 300-km radius.

Agra (210 km) One of the 'Seven Wonders of the World', Agra is the most sought after destination among the Indians as well as foreign tourists. With the construction of the Yamuna Expressway, reaching Agra from Delhi takes only 4 to 5 hours. Besides, the 'Epitome of Love', the Taj Mahal, there are many other monuments in the city too which can be explored during a visit. However, if one plans to visit only Taj Mahal, a day is enough to complete the tour.

Jaipur (268 km) The 'Pink City' Jaipur is royal, majestic and colourful with a strong historical background. The vibrant culture and magnificent architectural structures are the major attractions of the city. There are no direct flights to Jaipur from New Delhi; however, train and bus network is pretty good. Bus and Volvo services run by private owners and state governments can be easily booked to reach Jaipur in about 4-5 hours from Delhi.

Mathura-Vrindavan (160 km) Taking a religious trip to the abode of Lord Krishna is a perfect way to spend a weekend with your family. Mathura, the birth place of Lord Krishna and Vrindavan, where he spent most of his childhood, can be reached in about 3 hours. Both these places are known for their sanctity; hence, are flocked by a large number of tourists. There are many temples to visit and take the blessings of the deity. Accommodation facilities can also be easily availed of as a plenty of options are present in both the cities. Mathura is known for an Indian sweet Peda which is famous across the country.

Bharatpur Wildlife Sanctuary (198 km) Also known as Keoladeo National Park, the Bharatpur Sanctuary is a home to many endangered avians. With more than 230 different species of birds and 27 species of mammals, it is a great place for birdwatching and be close to nature. There are not only resident birds, but also winged visitors, including water birds can be seen here. Besides the sanctuary, there are a few temples as well which can be visited during the trip to Bharatpur.

Rishikesh (243 km) It would not wrong to call Rishikesh the 'Gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas'. Bestowed with the holy Ganga, challenging peaks, dense forests, strenuous rapids make Rishikesh one of the most adventurous places in north India. Ram and Lakshman Jhula, Neelkanth Mahadev Temple and Triveni Ghat are some of the major attractions of Rishikesh. It is a best place for adventure sports like river rafting, camping, bungee jumping, trekking and rock climbing.

Lansdowne, Mussorie and Nainital (250-290 km) There are many places in the hills near Delhi which can be explored and enjoyed during weekends. Lansdowne, Nainital and Mussorie are some of such places which can be visited for snow-covered peaks and fresh air. Heritage places and religious sites can also be explored in these places for a memorable journey.
