Key Highlights Of The NCRB Data On Crime Rate

Safety is one of the key aspect most homebuyers do not wish to compromise. One of the prime parameters to choose a locality to buy a home, a high crime rate can be a detriment and bring down the livability quotient of a city/state. But did you know, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) , 37 lakh accused were arrested in 2016. The report also observes that while these were instances of reported and recorded crimes, the ones who manage to escape untried might be much more.

Here is the list of cities and how did they fare in the crime rate:

Overview

Over 48.30 lakh cognizable crimes were recorded in 2016. This number has grown by three per cent since 2014. Here are some numbers:

*Of all the crimes recorded under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) , Uttar Pradesh accounted for 9.5 per cent of cases.  

*Madhya Pradesh was next with 8.9 per cent of the total cases reported.

*Maharashtra followed with 8.8 per cent of total crimes recorded is the third most unsafe state.

*Kerala stood at the fourth rank with 8.7 per of cent of total crimes. Kerala is is among the worst in south India.

In 2017, The Economist ranked two Indian cities – Delhi at 43rd and Mumbai at 45th – in the list of Safe Cities Index where 60 cities were surveyed worldwide. Tokyo, Singapore and Osaka were ranked as the safest cities globally, in that order.

Crime rate

*Under the IPC crimes, Delhi reported the highest crime rate at 974.90 followed by Kerala at 727.60. These states have even surpassed the national average of 233.60.

*Kerala, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu had the highest number of crime under the Special and Local Laws (SLL) .

'Safe' and unsafe cities

*Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Sikkim and Nagaland are among the 'safe' cities in India where incidence of IPC crimes were below 2,000.

*Some other states had about 2,001-5,000 IPC crimes registered. Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Puducherry fall in this list.

*The next lot consists of states where number of crimes reported is between 5,001-25,000 and this includes Jammu Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Punjab and Jharkhand had about 25,001-50,000 crimes reported in 2016.

*Chattisgarh, Haryana and Odisha followed next with 50,000 to 1 lakh crimes reported in the year.

*Telangana, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Assam and Karnataka are among states that have about 1-1.5 lakh reported crimes.

*Bihar, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Rajasthan are states that had 1.50-2 lakh reported crimes.

*The most notorious in this list put together by the NCRB is Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Kerala with over 2 lakh cases reported throughout the year.

Other highlights

*Coimbatore is among the safest for women and the local police gives the credit to their mission of Operation Zero Crime. Fortunately, there were no rapes, dowry harrasment or domestic violence reported in Coimbatore in 2016. Assault on women constituted 1.8 per cent of the total crime recorded whereas the national average is 13.8.

*NCRB also records that crime against foreign nationals have increased and the most number of cases are from Delhi (154) , Maharashtra (38) and Puducherry (33) .

NGO Plan India also came out with a Gender Vulnerabilty Index which declared that Goa, followed by Kerala, Mizoram, Sikkim and Manipur are among the safest for women. The study was based on parameters such as protection, poverty, health and education.

*IDFC Institute conducted a survey titled  Safety Trends and Reporting of Crime (SATARC) which studied that among the metro cities Mumbaikars were the only lot who wouldn't worry about safety of women even at night with 76 per cent expressing anxiety if the woman is not back by 11 pm as against Delhi where 97 per cent worry if a woman has not got back home by this time. 90 per cent of *Bangaloreans and 89 per cent of Chennaites express anxiety in a similar situation.
