We all know and acknowledge how the Delhi Metro has changed the way people in the national capital travel. A revolution in India's urban public transport system, the Delhi Metro has received plenty of appreciation from urban planners across the world.
Here are 10 interesting facts about the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) that would tell you more about a transport network you so love:
- The current 213-km long Metro network has a total of 166 stations, including six stations of the Airport Express Link. The network was opened to public first in December 2002.
- The Delhi Metro provides parking facilities at 91 stations. Managed by private contractors, the lots help you park your two-and four-wheelers to avail of Metro Services at a monthly rate of Rs 1,000 for cars, Rs 475 for two-wheelers and autos and Rs 45 for bicycles.
- The DMRC network is India's first public transport system which is differently-abled friendly. These facilities include automatic flap gates for those moving in wheelchairs; a special space for wheelchairs at the first and last door of the train and otherwise four seats in each coach reserved for old and physically challenged; tactile paths for the visually impaired; and exclusive toilet facilities for disabled, etc. In fact, the DMRC was awarded with the National Award for Outstanding Work in Creation of Barrier-Free Environment for the Persons with Disabilities in the year 2008.
- If during your journey, you lose your belongings at any of the stations, you just have to log on to the DMRC site to check if your items are noted in the found list. If you find them mentioned here, you just have to make a call to claim your belongings.
- About 64 stations across various lines have rain-water harvesting systems in place. Many Metro stations also have roof top solar power plants.
- Appreciated for its green initiatives, the DMRC plants 10 trees if it fells one for its construction work.
- The DMRC's training institute was set up in 2002 at Shastri Park Train Depot in Delhi. It is the only institute in the country with "facilities to impart customised training on almost all aspects of operations and maintenance of rail-based urban transportation systems".
- Data suggest the Delhi Metro has helped in taking about 3.9 lakh vehicles off of the streets of the national capital.
- You can get all the information about the network on your phone if you have an Android-or iOS-enabled mobile phone. You could download the mobile app on both operating systems.
- There are a total of 139 ATM (automated teller machine) branches across Metro stations, making transactions easy while you are on the go.
