All You Need To Know About Delhi’s RTR Flyover

Commuters travelling from Delhi’s Outer Ring Road to the Indira Gandhi International Airport will now be able to have a smooth ride with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal inaugurating an additional stretch of the Rao Tula Ram (RTR) flyover on July 16. The stretch will help decongest the Rao Tula Ram crossing at the Outer Ring Road. The Outer Ring Road stretch near Munirka has for years been known for notorious traffic jams that many commuters had resigned to.
The 2.7-km single-way carriageway that runs parallel to the existing flyover provides a signal-free connectivity between Munirka and Army Research and Referral Hospital near Subroto Park near the National Highway-8.
Constructed at a cost of Rs 205 crore, the new stretch will be a boon for many south Delhi commuters from areas, including Munirka, Hauz Khas, Greater Kailash and Safdarjung Enclave.
The existing RTR Flyover was earlier proposed as a two-way carriageway from IIT Delhi Gate to Munirka, but was later turned into a single-lane stretch after the residents raised objections calling it a constant source of ‘noise pollution’. However, this single carriageway further created traffic snarls. Following this, a new stretch was proposed in 2014, with a construction deadline of 2016. However, the project’s completion deadline was missed for over two years due to delay in permission for cutting of trees, shifting of utilities, residents’ opposition and financial problems with the construction company. The project also faced delays in receiving signages and safety audits. This also led to a 19 per cent rise in the construction cost of the project.
