Delhi Is World’s Sixth Fastest Growing Metro: Study
In a global study of 300 fastest growing global cities, national capital Delhi is placed at the sixth position. Other Indian cities to get a mentioned in the Brookings study, titled Global Metro Monitor 2018, are Hyderabad (14), Surat (19), Mumbai (23), Bengaluru (46) and Chennai (139).
According to the study, the employment growth rate in Delhi in 2014-16 was nearly 4.7 per cent while growth has remained at 6.6 per cent.
Globally, Ireland’s Dublin has been featured as the fastest growing metro city in the world, followed by San Jose in the US and Chengdu in China. San Francisco and Beijing are just above New Delhi in the study. India’s financial capital Mumbai is placed at the 23rd position in Global Metro Monitor Index.
The Brookings study is based on qualitative and quantitative analysis of the metro cities on the basis of two parameters, employment or job opportunities and GDP per capita. Overall 300 cities were analysed in the report on the basis of their contribution to the nation’s economy and gross domestic product. The index covered 140 developed economies and 160 emerged economies.
Also, according to the study, between 2014 and 2016, metro areas in China and Emerging Asia-Pacific nations which include India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, experienced the fastest GDP per capita growth while Middle Eastern and African metro areas exhibited the fastest employment growth. This is majorly due to rising infrastructural development which employs huge workforce.
Earlier in July, Delhi on was ranked 23rd in ease of doing business in India while Andhra Pradesh topped the list.
