Delhi's Student Localities Decoded
Being a student in the national capital is a lifetime experience in itself. Thousands of students from across the country vie every year to get admission in Delhi's best colleges. And if you are lucky enough, then words like Sarojini ke kapde, Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station, Tom Uncle's maggi, rickwalle bhaiya, CP chale kya become a part of your vocabulary in no time. Although student life is largely hassle-free, exam results and accommodation do take up a lot of mind space. As all students can't be accommodated in a hostel, they seek outside accommodation, either as a paying guest or on sharing-an-apartment basis.
Students, especially those coming from outside Delhi, face a lot of difficulty in finding the right place to lodge.

Housing Delhi University's (DU) North Campus, north Delhi is the home to a large number of students. As many colleges dot the area, the housing demand-supply ratio is always skewed. Kamala Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Vijay Nagar, Model Town and Kingsway Camp are the preferred locations.
The PG rent for an occupant varies between Rs 5,000 and Rs 12,000. Most of the PGs are fully-furnished with air conditioner, RO water, TV and power backup.
A 2BHK flat rent is available around Rs 15,000-25,000 a month depending on whether it is fully-furnished or not. Generally, three to four students club in their resources to share rooms.
Upscale areas such as Lajpat Nagar, Kalkaji, Dhaula Kuan, South Extension and Greater Kailash exhibit a great demand for rented apartments as distinguished DU South Campus colleges like Gargi College, Venkateshwara College, Lady Sri Ram College are in its vicinity.
It is second-costliest area in Delhi after Lutyens' Delhi. Urban villages such as the Hauz Khas village and Shahpur Jat are teeming with designer boutiques, restaurants and art galleries.
PG rates vary between Rs 6,000 and Rs 12,000 for single occupancy.
If one wishes to stay in a rented 1+1 flat, it may cost anywhere between Rs 12,000 and Rs 18,000 a month, while the cost of a 2BHK flat is around Rs 20,000-Rs 30,000.
Renowned markets of Delhi such as Sarojini Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, South Extension, Kotla Mubarakpur, GK's M-block Market, etc. and malls such as Ansal Plaza, Ambience, DLF, MGF Metropolitan, Select Citywalk are in close proximity.
Although east Delhi does not boast of great colleges, Laxmi Nagar hosts students from different parts of India and Nepal to take coaching in chartered accountancy and other sundry courses. Being the focal point for east Delhi area, Laxmi Nagar has become a shopping hub as well. Akshardham Temple is 500 metres away. Laxmi Nagar is very famous for its DDA sports ground.
Reasonable rooms can be found in Laxmi Nagar, Shakarpur, Nirman Vihar and Karkarduma.
PG rates for single room starts from Rs 2,500 and can go up to Rs 6,000.
For a 2BHK flat, the rates vary between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000 a month.
West Delhi is largely a residential hub where you will find people of all caste and communities, but its predominantly Punjabi. Institutes like Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT) and Maharaja Surajmal Institute of Technology (MSIT) are situated here. So, the demand for rooms in Subhash Nagar, Janakpuri and Dwarka is high. The area has a plethora of malls, shopping complexes, cinema halls or office complex.
West Delhi also has some good schools and colleges which find their place on the education map of Delhi. Patel Nagar, Punjabi Bagh, Dwarka, Janakpuri and Rajouri Garden in west Delhi and Pitampura, Rohini in north-west are the major localities.
A 2BHK flat is available from Rs 15,000 and can go up to 25,000 a month. The PG rate for a single room starts form Rs 5,000 and go up to Rs 10,000.
