After all, everyone needs that well-deserved break after a year full of hard work, and what better way to unwind than to head out to a lesser-known land with friends and family? Begin with the basics: Just before you leave your household, do a quick check of the following:

• All lights are switched off
• All electrical appliances are plugged out
• Cooking gas supply is disabled from mains
• All doors and windows in the house are safely bolted
• Curtains and drapes are drawn
• Security systems like CCTV etc. are functional and turned on
• All waste has been disposed off

Do not make your absence felt: As a thumb rule, do ensure that you have put a temporary hold on the delivery of items of daily use before you leave. Such items include newspapers, orders/couriers or daily groceries that are delivered at your doorstep. Doing this will save you money while at the same time ensuring safety. A pile of newspapers or milk packets lying at your door are the most obvious indications that your house is abandoned.

Leave a pair of watchful eyes behind you: Reliable neighbours can be of valuable help, as they can keep a watch on your home and stay vigilant about who has been visiting your home during your absence. Ask a trusted neighbour to pay frequent visits to check your home for any suspicious activity, and make sure that he/she has your number so that you can be reached in case of an emergency.

Mimic your presence: A relatively new way to ensure the safety of your home is by fitting automatic timers on the lights in your home, which enables them to be automatically switched on and off, even during your absence.

Do not invite trouble: Ensure that all valuables are safely locked within the house, and costly furniture and fixtures are kept away from prying eyes.

Do not advertise on social media: No matter how difficult this may seem to those who like to extend their lives to the internet, don’t do it. With burglars and criminal becoming more tech-savvy than ever before, you never know which social media website may end up sharing your vacation details with a housebreaker around you.
