Metro To Give A New Lease Of Life To Old Gurgaon
With an aim to connect the old and new parts of Gurgaon, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) will soon submit a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Metro expansion. The report, expected to be ready by November 30, is being prepared by Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) India.
Under the project, the city’s second Metro link, will connect various localities between HUDA City Centre and Gurgaon’s railway station. This corridor will meet the long-standing demand of connecting the mass rapid transit system with the old parts of Gurgaon. These areas are sparsely connected with a few bus services and shared autos and rickshaws, making it difficult for the residents to travel to the commercial areas in the newer areas of the city.
The detailed route as mapped in the DPR of the new Metro corridor will start from the Huda City Centre and will go up to Sector 21. Some of the key stations on the route include Subhash Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, Basai Road, Gurgaon railway station, Sheetla Mata Road and Rezang La Chowk.
The 1,700-crore project will be taken up by the Haryana Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (HMRTC). This route will be connected to a Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) at the Sector 21 station. Under this, a high-speed rail network connecting Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Shahjahanpur-Neemrana-Behrod in Rajasthan are being planned.
According to previous media reports, the HMRTC plans to create a ring of Metro in Gurgaon to provide last mile connectivity. For this, the corporation is mulling a second phase that would provide connectivity to the Dwarka Sector 21 Metro station.
This move will not just provide connectivity to the residents of old Gurgaon, it will also help develop better infrastructure and real estate in this part of the city. Looking at old and new parts of Gurgaon, one could witness the stark difference in the development of the two. Also, one could witness a difference in the kind of housing in the two parts.
Look forward to
With the coming of Metro in the old part of the city, modernisation on various levels could be expected. While better amenities could come up around Metro stations, housing could get a boost. Mostly dotted by row houses, one could expect a rise in the number of new homes being constructed and being sold at a higher price point. Also, there could be a substantial rise in the renting segment. Many migrants avoided living in old Gurgaon due to connectivity issues. Most preferred paying a heavy rent to stay around their workplace. Now, with this upcoming connectivity, these tenants could find a place to rent in the old part of the city at a much lesser price.
