Of Theme Homes and Dream Homes
Remember that scene from the 2001 blockbuster Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, when Shah Rukh Khan ostentatiously steps out of a helicopter in front of the palatial Raichand mansion to find his mother waiting for him with the aarti ki thaali? That’s one hard-to-forget combination, after all - a helipad, a mother’s love and a grandiose mansion! While huge fountains in the front lawn or a bedroom with windows bigger than the doors may look great on camera, off the camera, however, your dream home is meant to be an expression of things that matter to you. And then, whether or not SRK finds it fascinating enough to land his private chopper at your doorstep, ceases to be the point really.

In the 21st century, too many people wish to have their houses built around specific themes. Celebrity themes are some of the most popular ones among them. Some doable ideas can be open kitchens like the one in the popular TV show Big Boss, or children’s room like the one in Raju Chacha, complete with illuminated flooring, starry wallpapers, and toy-train tracks. Also, living room designs can derive broad hints from the magnificent Om Shanti Om set. While it is nice to wish for the best for your home, it’s also useful to keep things in perspective because the concept of home is too beautifully complicated to be bought or borrowed. It’s wonderful how much you can do with your perfect home, the moment you allow it to encompass all your little eccentricities. After all, it’s not just what you have that needs to be reflected in the house that you build, but also who you are.

It is crucial to ensure that the house that you build for yourself and your loved ones doesn’t lack a certain personality. So if you think it’s not appropriate to build that tetrastyle portico, or have that ceiling fan with The Beatles’ lyrics painted all over it, or get that quirky clay pot from the village flea market, think again. Maybe those things express you best. So what if they don’t promote that stuff on the TV and decor showrooms anymore? In the end, bricks and mortar may be enough in order to build a house, but you need a lot more than that to build a home, sweet home.
