Pokémon Go seems to to be the latest fad that has taken the world by storm. Not only has it swept gamers around the globe off their feet, but it is also redefining real estate marketing. To capitalise on the game's immense popularity among millennials, real estate agents, especially those in the US, are aligning the popular themes and features of the game with those of the properties for sale in their area. 

This real estate marketing phenomenon has so far been predominant in the US, but the success of Pokémon Go is not going to be limited to any country. It will be played and loved by people of all ages alike in various countries, including India. So, don't be surprised if one of these days you come across a listing that says "these apartments for sale in Noida have PokéStops", or "this property in Gurgaon is less than a kilometre from a Pokémon Go gym.

What is Pokémon Go?

An addictive game launched on both iOS and Android platforms, Pokémon Go has become a rage as it brings the virtual world of Pokémon into your real world. The cartoon series Pokémon was introduced years ago; since then this cartoon character has become a popular face in video games, trading cards, toys and merchandise. It doesn't come as a surprise that it is now the background for a superhit mobile game.

Launched in the US and the UK on July 6, the game will be soon be available in India as well (APKs are available for download for those who just can't wait).

How is it impacting real estate?

Given that a large part of the base of prospective real estate buyers is accounted for my millennials, who are either hooked to or appreciate video games and virtual reality features of this century, pitching a home for sale as a gamer's delight makes perfect sense. 

Also, there are some catch words that gaming buffs become very familiar with because of their virtual sojourns. When they come across those catchy lines, words or features in real life, too -- for example when they are out to buy or sell real estate -- these are more likely to make an impact and influence their decision.

While the world we live in is increasingly becoming a melting point for all things virtual and real, many property listings on global real estate websites like Zillow and Realtor are showcasing Pokémon Go features as unique selling points for properties for sale in the real world.

How is it played?

For starters, all you have to do is install the game on your Android or iOS device and go around your real-world hunting for the animated monsters. The more monsters you collect, the more powerful your Pokémon becomes. This would help you battle with other monsters as well, including the real-life belly monster (for weight-watchers).

So, for the Indians wanting to play this 7.5-million-downloads game, a strong 3G network and GPS services are all they need. You can play it while working out at a gym, dining with your friends, or strolling in a park.

Things to keep in mind

There are a few things that you should keep in mind while playing Pokémon Go in India:

• For explorers, this is one of the most amazing games, as it lets you visit some of the areas of your city or take detours which you have not explored yet. You might discover a new restaurant, a beautiful temple or end up at weird places.
• Unlike virtual world elsewhere, in India you could end up jumping into a water puddle or stumble upon a broken pavement, while you are busy collecting the coins and potions. Be careful because you may hit a pavement while walking back home. Make sure that you are safe and keep an eye on the road and not just on your mobile device.
