NH 1 or National Highway 1 is one of the major National Highways of North India that connect the Kashmir valley to Leh as well as rest of the country. The northern terminal is in Uri in Jammu & Kashmir and the southern terminal is in Leh. Recognised as one of the longest and oldest highways of India, the route was a part of the historical Grand Trunk Road connecting Bengal to Kabul. The approx. 534 kilometres stretch of NH 1 from Uri to Leh is a part of the North-South Corridor. Stretches of NH 1 pass through extremely treacherous terrain and faces shut-offs because of avalanches or landslides are common in Winter months. The Jawahar Tunnel connecting Jammu with Kashmir Valley across the Pir Panjal Range falls en route.

NH 1 enters Haryana at Ambala and passes through one of Northern Railways' major railway junctions - the Ambala Cantonment, close to the Ambala City.
