A town and hill station in Pune district, Lonavala is one of the tourist attractions in Maharashtra. It is approximately 64 kilometres away from Pune and about 95 kilometres from Mumbai. The city had been a part of the Yadav dynasty and was also ruled by the Mughals. Lord Elphinston, former governor of Bombay Presidency discovered the twin hill stations of Lonavala and Khandala. The term ‘Lonavala’ was derived from Sanskrit word Lonavli which means many caves.

Indian Air Force station is located at Aamby valley City, while two airports in Mumbai and Pune are close to Lonavala. A seaplane service is also available between Juhu and Pawana Dam.
